Do you know Cap Karoso in Sumba? Sumba is an island located between Asia and Oceania, where ancestral cultures and mystical beliefs meet.
Until recently, the island was still inhabited by headhunters and each year, the local Pasola tradition reenacts wars between villages through horseback jousts that gather thousands of spectators.
The island of Sumba remains a unique place, where strong beliefs prevail and history is dictated orally.
Cap Karoso: The transition to tourism
Despite these traditions, the island of Sumba seeks to open up to tourism. The main hotel on the island, Nihiwatu, has been voted best hotel in the world for two consecutive years by Travel+Leisure magazine.
In terms of infrastructure, an airport and roads have been built. A hospitality school has also opened its doors to promote the development of this island, which remains one of the poorest in Indonesia.
Cap Karoso, a remarkable hotel project
Cap Karoso will be the first opening under the concept The Frenchman. The controlled size of the establishment (47 rooms and 20 villas sold to private individuals) fosters the feeling of having been invited by a friend.
The beach club will be the center of the hotel and the place where mixologists and temporary DJs will perform. The chefs, for their part, will run a restaurant open only in the evening where they will cook in direct contact with the clients.
Architecture and eco-responsible tourism
To create this dream place, The Frenchman has called upon the English architect Gary Fell, who has been awarded numerous times for his designs across Asia. Fully integrated into nature thanks to green roofs, the hotel will blend modern architecture with the materials and local craftsmanship of the island of Sumba.
Cap Karoso will be an example of responsible tourism, with a team of specialists in sustainable development to minimize the hotel’s footprint on the earth. The hotel will also provide vital resources such as drinking water to the surrounding villages.
